This is a story about how to survive as an artist in a world that is changing quickly. The East Village of New York City is a vibrant and unique location in 1993. It is attracting young people from all over the country who are eager to pursue a career in music, the arts, or another creative field because it has low rents and a burgeoning music and arts scene, which is partially the result of run-down buildings and high crime. Jack, who is trying to make it with his band and hails from a nearby suburb in New Jersey, is one of these people. Jack believes that his band may be on the verge of success.
However, Jack’s bass and the band’s lead singer, who is also Jack’s roommate, vanish shortly before the band’s biggest performance. Jack believes that his friend took the bass so that he could sell it to make money for his drug habit. The narrative follows Jack’s search for his bass and friend. He stumbles upon a possible web of crimes involving local real estate developers who appear committed to using any means necessary to remake the city during his search, as well as several characters who only exist in New York.
In this book the author did an excellent job of capturing this period in New York City history, when young people who were committed to pursuing their dreams of becoming musicians, artists, or other creative professionals could still make a living in the city. The book also accurately depicts the impending sense of change that overtook people like the main characters in the story. It’s almost like a pre-nostalgia, when people felt like their way of life was slipping away, even though they couldn’t have predicted how much their neighborhood would change in the next ten years. The book provided a vibrant cast of supporting characters, particularly the police officer who acted as Jack’s foil, as well as a potent mystery that moves the plot along and keeps the reader fully engaged.
