Olivia is going through a difficult divorce and focuses all of her work on her late father’s beekeeping operation. Ava just moved to the same New Hampshire town as Olivia in an effort to assist her daughter in completing her senior year of high school. Both of these single-parent households are looking for a place to feel at home and accepted. I consider Jodi Picoult to be a consistent and dependable author. Since around the time I was expecting my first child, my son, which was now thirteen years ago, I have enjoyed Picoult’s works. Mad Honey, in my opinion, is a novel that enables Picoult and Boylan to go back to Picoult’s beginnings. While reading Mad Honey, I was reminded of how much I adored The Pact and Salem Falls; it is undeniably a plot that mirrors these outstanding books. Since I haven’t read the previous book Jodi Picoult co-wrote with her daughter, I was originally unsure how this author pairing would work. But as soon as I started reading this, all of my worries vanished; it was a completely charged read!
A very intriguing and compelling story framework is used in Mad Honey. We witness the dramatic events of this story play out in a backwards and forwards fashion as they are told from the moving points of view of the characters Lily and Olivia. I truly did applaud the authors for choosing this approach with Mad Honey because it was a very unique and original way to portray such a startling subject. The connection to Jordan McAfee, a familiar face who serves as the story’s lawyer and the brother of the main character, was another outstanding feature of this book. Every time Jordan entered the scene of this potent tale, it appeared as though he was lifting the pages of Mad Honey. It was wonderful to be reminded of Jodi Picoult’s skill in storytelling.
Other important topics are covered by Picoult and Boylan in the pages of Mad Honey. This story covers a wide range of topics, including teenage love, friendship, single parenthood, motherhood, coming-of-age concerns, bullying, escape, resettlement, identity, sexual relationships, domestic abuse, familial ties, incarceration, and the law. It is virtually impossible to put Mad Honey down since the characters and the lives that they are connected to are so completely captivating. Particularly at the book’s halfway point, Picoult and Boylan offer some shocking turns. This sudden shock flips the entire story on its head. It was nice that I had certain guesses and suspicions about how the plot would end up playing out.
Mad Honey’s central theme is apiculture, and I am extremely appreciative of the authors’ extensive study that went into it to make it such an educational read. These sections of the text truly appeared to cheer me up, and I now have a lot more respect for beekeepers’ jobs. I’m delighted this portion of the book was incorporated into Mad Honey’s overarching story.
